L'aire marine protégée
During a day trip sailing on Andrea Jensen you will have the opportunity to visit the fabulous, protected marine reserve around Capo Caccia and Porto Conte (zones B &C). We are an AMP authorised operator, approved to take a small number of guests into these spectacular, protected waters. To do so, we must adhere to strict protocols set up by the park and marine reserve management, all of which are designed to protect the marine environment and ecosystems. You will learn more about these protection protocols during the day trip, as we follow the Alghero coastline to Capo Caccia and Port Conte, where we stop for lunch and swimming.
For more information regarding the important work of the Nature Park and marine reserve or to buy tickets to some of their sites, exhibitions and events, you can visit their website www.algheroparks.it
National Parks and Marine Reserves in Sardinia
One way to help nature and our oceans to recover from damage due to pollution, over fishing, over tourism etc. Is to create National Parks, Marine Reserves (AMP) and Nature Reserves.
On the island of Sardinia there are;
Six AMP Marine Reserves as follows,
1. Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo
2. Capo Testa Punta Falcone
3. Island Asinara
4. Capo Caccia - Isola Piana
5. Sinia Peninsula - Island of Mal di Vente
6. Capo Carbonara
Three National Parks as follows,
1. Asinara Island
2. La Maddalena Archipelago
3. Golfo di Orosei and the Gennargentu
Four Regional Parks as follows,
1. Porto Conte
2. Molentargius
3. Gutturu Mannu
4. Tepilora
One such regional park and protected marine reserve is close to Alghero. This is the Natural Park Region of Porto Conte and Marine Protected Area of Capo Caccia - Isola Piana. This particular nature reserve incorporates protected areas on land and sea and can be explored by foot, bike, golf buggy and boat or even kayak.
Exploring the Marine Reserve of Capo Caccia and Porto Conte by boat
Andrea Jensen is the perfect way to explore the marine reserve of Capo Caccia, Andrea Jensen has a large but slow turning engine and propellor which are extremely efficient. In the afternoons after lunch we set the sails and always do our best to sail back towards Alghero (favourable winds required).
The protected area is divided into 3 zones according to the level of protection they are afforded.
Zone A - Access strictly restricted, requiring pre approval from the Park Authority.
Zone B - These defined stretches of coast have specific rules applied to them by the Park Authority which must be followed by all Marine traffic. Anchoring is not freely permitted
Zone C - The entire bay of Porto Conte where fishing activities and boating activities are permitted but are required to follow the correct protocols defined by the Park Authority. Anchoring is not freely permitted.
In zones B and C, boats are allowed to anchor on inert sandy seabeds and on rocky seabeds exclusively on the coast, in the sites listed in the Parks protocols.
Dolphin Watching - Alghero
We often see dolphins during our day trip. The route we take gives the best chance of seeing dolphins if they are around. We have great respect for all marine life and would never chase or put the dolphins under any stress. We are just delighted if they choose to come to our boat to play. This is their choice but as they are inquisitive animals it is often the case that they appear at the bow and surprise us all.
Andrea Jensen has a large slow turning propellor and the sound seems to attract the dolphins to come and play in our bow wave. Seeing dolphins up close, in their natural habitat is always an amazing and memorable experience, one to treasure from your holiday in Sardinia.
